Artist Statement- Endangered Species Work
Drawing is my medium of choice because it can be as simple as a pencil and piece of paper, or as complex as you can imagine. The idea of simple lines to express big thoughts or feelings intrigues me. That is how my current "Endangered" work came about. The endangered species list is growing. There are many things we should be doing to help protect the world we live in rather than destroy it. I use one line to create an image of these endangered species. I want to show how powerful yet fragile these animals are and how everything in the universe is connected and affected by our actions. This line gives it a strong presence that is barely there. This might allow you to see a little sadness and a little hope. I want to give these animals a voice in hopes that they are heard.
My art is my perspective of a moment in time. It is usually connected to nature even though that is not always apparent. The paper I use is Thai Banana Paper. It is environmentally friendly and made from 100% kozo with large pieces of banana bark. Kozo is the inner bark of a mulberry tree, which is harvested without harming the tree. The banana bark is taken after the banana harvest is complete. It would normally be thrown out without another use. I am always looking for ways to be more earth conscious. This paper gives me that, and an organic background for these animals to exist in.
